Noom craze hits expats

A new weight loss app launched in the US is now making waves across the Atlantic in the UK and is now catching on with expats here in Spain. Noom, is based on behavioural insights into weight loss and nutrition, and says it is rapidly growing in the UK with over 50,000 people signing up per month. The surge in sign ups is, according to NOOM, because it promises to help people lost weight and keep it off for good.
The app has had over 50 million downloads in total as people ditch traditional diets and calorie counting to shift some pounds. Of course, once the craze hit the UK it wasn’t long before expats in Spain heard about it from friends and family and wanted to find out for themselves.
Noom is designed by doctors and psychologists to help you change the way you think and feel about what you eat, and how you exercise, so you can develop healthier habits. It is said to be like having your very own personal trainer, nutritionist and health coach all in one with access to everything all available on the app. It also encourages eating real, whole foods and recommends more nutrient-dense meals and snacks as often as possible.
Noom aims to eliminate the stress and worry of believing that losing weight and staying fit and healthy is a struggle.
The Noom plan says it takes just three steps to get started:
First, take a quiz and receive a customised plan, then log what you eat. The biggest mistake we have all made while in on lockdown is having access to food in our fridge and cupboards 24/7- least this will give members some stability back to their eating patterns.
Secondly, get a personalised calorie allocation and learn to balance foods. Sometimes we can be unsure of what food groups work best for our bodies.
The structure of the plans in place from Noom means members can hear from other users too their findings and which nutritional foods work best for different people.
Thirdly, daily personal coaching and real-time support. Support can go a long way and Noom has promised that they offer support and coaching with their members throughout the journey, making every step that little easier to get to your preferred weight/ fitness. Noom helps you identify and change the habits that have been holding you back.
Noom is a 16-week healthy foundational course focused on behaviuor change that will help you learn, practice and master healthy habits. Think of the Noom app as your virtual, interactive classroom. You’ll receive daily lessons with tips, challenges and strategies to help you start taking action right away. After completing the 16 weeks, you’ll have the option to continue on to part 2 of the program, which is designed to enhance your healthy habits and make these behaviours your new normal.
