Large explosion in Torrevieja

An explosion early this morning (Thursday) has caused serious damage to a building on Calle Diego Ramírez street Torrevieja. Guardia Civil are looking for the owner of the first apartment, believed to be the source of the blast. Guardia Civil and Local Police are still at the scene trying to establish the cause of the explosion but initial reports indicate that the explosion may have been set deliberately.
Bottles of butane gas and petrol canisters were found inside the apartment on the busy street. The street is closed to traffic along with part of Calle Apolo while firefighters and security forces work through the mountain of debris left by the explosion. According to the Provincial Firefighters Consortium “a very powerful explosion has destroyed all the partitions of the house, including the dividing wall of the adjoining house” and was “probably” deliberately set.
The shock wave from the blast sprayed rubble and furniture onto the street and caused damage not only to the building but also a parked car. The building has been evacuated and at the moment the safety and “habitability is being assessed by municipal technicians and the Guardia Civil is in charge of investigating the causes.”
The force of the explosion tore off the facade of the apartment which then fell onto the street. Thankfully, no one has been seriously injured although two residents were treated for shock.
Sources indicate that the owner of the apartment in question had a series of serious disagreements with neighbours in recent years.
